A Julian Lennon Comeback? Let’s Hope so…

When it comes to the children of the beloved John Lennon there can be no doubt that John’s firstborn, Julian, was born with more than his share of the Lennon ‘looks’, voice, mannerisms, and yes, talent. That’s not to say John’s younger son Sean isn’t talented as well, but Sean seems to lack direction, dedication, and focus. Sean seems to be a momma’s boy (but in a good way), whereas Julian has had a much tougher time in 46 years.

For some reason that we will never know, Yoko chose not to fully share John’s wealth with Julian, and as a result Julian has had a tough time, at times, making ends meet or even feeling like a real member of the Lennon family. To me, it’s been too unfair over the years and he deserved much better. Look, bottom line is that Julian is the heir to John Lennon’s talent and in a fair world he would have been included in the ‘family’ that was left when John was taken from them, and us, 29 years ago this last December 8th.

I’ve made it a point to follow Julian’s life, as well as Sean, in the years following the assassination of John. Julian has always sounded like John, and plays guitar, piano, and other instruments just as well as John did. Listening to Julian sing is almost too hard to take at times, and this morning was one of those times. Upon hearing Julian and his musical partner, James Scott Cook, on TV this morning I was reminded just how much he has to offer. It’s time for all of us to take notice of Julian and give him a chance to bring some of his music to the United States.

Lucy

Julian, after many years of living a quiet life in Europe, is attempting a comeback of sorts with the release of a new EP called, “Lucy”. Lucy is, of course, the Lucy referenced in The Beatles “Lucy in the sky with diamonds”. Julian’s young friend back in late sixties, Lucy drew Julian a picture that he (Julian) then showed to his father John, which then inspired the song. As an aside I always found it amusing that all the Beatles tell the story of how the song came about and that it wasn’t about LCD, and that many people simply don’t believe the story. It’s amusing because it is absolutely true that Lucy’s picture did in fact inspire the song, but it is also absolutely true that the song was indeed a wink and a nod to LCD, or rather a wink and a nod to those that would get the joke. Well, anyway…

As kids do Julian and Lucy lost touch with each other but because of Lucy’s ‘fame’ for being an inspiration for one of the most popular Beatles song, Lucy’s recent death from Lupus made the news and Julian found out. He reacted with a bit of sadness for an old friend, as anyone would, and began to think about her. Soon the song, “Lucy” was written by James Scott Cook and Julian decided to do a charity song for Lupus research. James has a grandmother with lupus, so the song bought the two together.

The Song

The song itself is reminiscent of ‘early Beatles’, with a pop feel and a catchy tune. No, it’s not John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, but then again Julian isn’t trying to be his father. “Lucy” is an old fashioned pop song that could, with enough airplay, get a whole lot of people interested in Julian Lennon in his own right.

I haven’t had time to do a lot of research on this new organization called “the revolution”, but for some reason Julian has joined forces with them to release this EP and MP3. The link is HERE. Of course the EP is also available at Amazon, Best Buy, Apple’s iTunes, and many other music outlets. However you decide to purchase the entire EP (and you should), check out therevolution.com and see if this is something you might want to support. I’ll report back with my own finding in the next few days.

Because I strongly believe that a world with more Julian Lennon music would be a good thing I bought it at Best Buy and iTunes, and maybe I’ll do something with therevolution as well. I want this song, the entire EP, to soar in hopes that Julian will embrace the industry again (in some fashion) and begin recording and releasing his work. It would also be nice if Ringo and Paul would lend a hand, perhaps some drums, bass, and vocals. It’s time for Paul and Ringo to recognize their friend’s son deserves the love only they can give to a blood relative of a fellow Beatle. After all, the love you take is equal to the love you make and all that, right?

If you believe as I do it would be really great if you help spread the word about Julian’s new EP. If you have a website or a blog of some kind your karma points would go up a bit if you make mention of it. I know John would love to see Julian finally get the recognition he deserves.

By the way, Julian was born on April 8th, 1963. He’s 46. John died at the young age of 40.
